ooouuuhhhhh (me shuddering). When I was a kid I looked at way too many National Geographic close-up photos of spiders. I think they are all aliens (arachnids is aliens spelled backwards).
less important is the type, more important is the location! is this in your apartment? i guess you should've never left the midwest (as we don't have spiders here).
It looks so familiar, but I can't identify it. Do you know anyone who works at a University in the state where you found the spider? I would think someone there would know...

Short of that, did you see the D. Attenbogh series life in the undergrowth. lots of wasp and spider and springtails, my personal favorite...
